In recent weeks, Nigeria has once again been forced to confront the issue of police brutality and unaccountability. Reports of violence, including the reckless shooting of innocent civilians and students, have continued to surface, yet the response from the authorities has been alarmingly insufficient. The Commissioner of Police, despite being entrusted with the responsibility to uphold law and order, has tacitly condoned these actions, choosing to ignore or downplay the gravity of these incidents. This failure to act has led to a widespread sense of frustration and distrust in the police force, especially among students and young Nigerians who had hoped that the lessons of the #EndSARS protests would not be forgotten.

As students, we feel compelled to speak out against this escalating crisis. We cannot allow the memories of past injustices to fade without ensuring that they lead to real change. We cannot, and will not, remain silent while innocent lives are taken, and while the very institutions meant to protect us fail to do so. We are determined to prevent a repeat of the horrors witnessed during the #EndSARS protests, but we also demand that the police focus on their constitutional duty: to protect and serve the citizens of Nigeria.

A Legacy of Impunity

The Commissioner of Police's failure to address these serious allegations of police misconduct has created a culture of impunity within the force. Numerous reports of shootings—many of them directed at students and peaceful citizens—have been made, yet there has been no substantial investigation, no consequences, and no justice. It is as though these lives don't matter, and the violence continues unchecked. When a police force tasked with ensuring the safety of the people becomes a perpetrator of harm, the very foundation of justice and trust erodes.

This lack of accountability is particularly troubling given the significance of the police in the country's security apparatus. The police are not just law enforcers—they are meant to be protectors of the people. Instead, we are witnessing the opposite: an institution that seems to prioritize political motives and personal interests over the welfare of its citizens. This is unacceptable.

Our Demands for Change

We refuse to be passive observers of this cycle of violence and neglect. As concerned students and citizens, we are united in calling for immediate action. Our demands are clear, and they speak to the urgent need for accountability, justice, and reform:

1. Immediate Arrest of Mr. Moses: We demand the prompt and transparent arrest of Mr. Moses, the Head of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, who has been implicated in several incidents of police violence. His position of power should not shield him from justice. The law must apply equally to all, regardless of rank or status.

2. Cease Reckless Shooting: We urgently call on all security agencies to put an end to the reckless shooting of innocent citizens. Police officers must be trained to de-escalate situations and use force only when absolutely necessary. Excessive use of force, especially against students and peaceful protesters, is a direct violation of human rights and undermines public trust in law enforcement.

3. Thorough Investigation into the Attempted Murder of Mr. Alowonle: The attempted assassination of Mr. Alowonle, Chairman of the Osun Transport Management System, is an attack on the very principle of justice. This act of violence must not go uninvestigated or unpunished. We call on the
